Civil engineer graduated from the Polytechnic School of the University of S\u00e3o Paulo. Holds a Master’s and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the same institution. Currently the Director of DESEK, he has 54 years of experience in the design and consulting of concrete structures, including buildings, wind towers, hydroelectric power plants, tunnels, and dams in Brazil and abroad.<\/p>

He is an Honorary Member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI)<\/strong> and the Brazilian Concrete Institute (IBRACON)<\/strong>, where he also served as President.<\/p>

His recent areas of expertise include mass concrete for foundation blocks<\/strong>, alkali-aggregate reaction<\/strong>, delayed ettringite formation<\/strong>, concrete cooling<\/strong>, roller-compacted concrete<\/strong>, and performance evaluation systems for civil dam structures<\/strong>.<\/p>

    He worked as a designer for underground works, including the executive design of the Sacom\u00e3 Station<\/strong> on Line 2<\/strong> and the basic design for Line 5<\/strong> of the S\u00e3o Paulo Metro. During the construction of Line 5, he participated with Camargo Correa<\/strong> in the execution of Brooklin Station<\/strong>, the tunnels constructed by tunnel boring machines (TBM), and VSEs<\/strong>.<\/p>

    From 2017 to 2021, he worked at BabEng GmbH<\/strong> in Germany, involved in project development, planning, and specialized consulting for TBM projects. Notable projects include the Albvorlandtunnel<\/strong> in Stuttgart, the Red Line<\/strong> in Tel Aviv, the Ahmed Hamdi Road Tunnel<\/strong> under the Suez Canal in Egypt, and the executive design of Line 5<\/strong> of the Hamburg Metro<\/strong>.<\/p>

    Dr. Karin B\u00e4ppler, Head of Business Development and Pre-Sales, Traffic Tunneling Group, Herrenknecht AG, Germany<\/strong><\/p>

    Karin graduated in Civil Engineering from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)<\/strong>, Germany, and completed her postgraduate studies with a Ph.D. at the Colorado School of Mines<\/strong>, USA. She joined Herrenknecht<\/strong> in 1997 and has since specialized in geotechnology, research, and development.<\/p>

    From 2008 to 2024, Karin managed the Geotechnical and Consulting Department<\/strong> of the Traffic Tunneling Division<\/strong> at Herrenknecht’s<\/strong> headquarters in Schwanau, Germany. In her current role, she is responsible as Head of Business Development and Pre-Sales<\/strong>.<\/p>

    Since June 2013, Karin has also been a member of the Supervisory Board of Herrenknecht AG<\/strong>.<\/p>

    She is a guest lecturer in postgraduate programs at universities in France, Germany, Italy, and the USA on the topic of tunnel excavation<\/strong> and tunnel boring machines<\/strong>. He is currently an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Mining Engineering at UFRGS, teaching Engineering Geology and Rock Mechanics for the Mining Engineering and Civil Engineering courses. He works in postgraduate studies as a master's advisor for dissertations in ground control and underground mining. He participates in geomechanics projects for the mining industry in the areas of rock mass control, underground coal mining projects, and retreat mining operation projects using backfill. He has performed in-situ stress measurements in a highway tunnel, at the Votorantim Cimentos Baltar Mine, and at the JMC Jacobina mine. Stability analysis and design of limestone mine slopes (Votorantim Cimentos, Nexa Resources, Cemento Avellaneda, and Cemento Artigas).
